Art Fiction: The Art Forger by B. A. Shapiro. I soaked up the details of how to forge a masterpiece if you’re short on time and in need of ill gotten gains.

Art Historical Fiction: “Johannes Vermeer: The Girl With A Pearl Earring” does a nice job of recreating the Netherlands of the 16th century through the eyes of a young woman working in the household of painter Vermeer. I was especially interested in the machine he used to assure accurate proportions. Written by Tracy Chevalier.

Your Brain on Art: How the Arts Transform Us is a non-fiction book with study after study extolling the positive effects of creating all kinds of art on our humanity. Written by Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross.

The Night Portrait: A Novel of WWII & Da Vinci's Italy by Laura Morelli is historical fiction that takes the reader into two worlds: that of Leonardo Da Vinci and France during WWII with the Mona Lisa at the center of each.

The Urban Sketching Handbook: Understanding Perspective by Stephanie Bower is the most practical guides to learning perspective I’ve used.

The Creative Act: A Way Of Being by Rick Rubin is a series of essays exploring creativity.

You can use It’s Never Too Late To Begin Again: Discovering Creativity and Meaning at Midlife and Beyond (Artist's Way) by Julia Cameron to write your memoire and get back in touch with favorite pursuits you had when you were young.

Old In Art School: A Memoir Of Starting Over by Nell Irvin Painter gives a behind the scenes look into launching an art career late in life.

The Secret Lives Of Color by Kassia St. Clair enumerates the amazing historical origins of my favorite pigments.
